Globally, 463 million students lack internet access or the technology necessary for online learning. Schools across the world are still, 15 months into the pandemic, having to adapt learning to keep their students safe. Viamo’s remote training product addresses the challenges the education sector is facing in lower to middle income countries by providing lessons via basic mobile phones for educators, parents, and students.
Since 2018, with our partners Viamo has launched over 50 remote training projects across 24 countries to provide volunteers, students, and employees with lessons and knowledge they need. In 2020, Viamo partnered with RTI International to train over 17,000 teachers enrolled in the Malawi Early Grade Reading Improvement Activity (MERIT). Together, we collaborated with RTI to design and deliver a custom mobile curriculum with gamified content, weekly reviews, and group discussions using Interactive Voice Response (IVR) and SMS channels. After the first week, 86% of head teachers reported feeling more prepared to support their direct reports in carrying out their teaching activities after receiving the mobile training, and over half the teachers preferred mobile learning to an in-person training.
In Afghanistan, Catholic Relief Services needed to train over 500 teachers, shuras, and parents to support school-age children. This project showcased a holistic approach to remote education in which students learn and are supported by their communities. Shuras are elected community leaders who work closely with teachers to ensure students are supported, and both teachers and shuras were given lessons on how best to support students. Parents were given lessons on how to support not only their child, but the teachers as well.
The training had over 80% completion rates. Education must continue. Mobile solutions for education can be deployed quickly and effectively, especially in complicated terrains. By co-designing mobile training curriculum with our partners, Viamo ensures exceptional user experience for educators and students. We use human centered design to ensure we meet best practices and measure knowledge and behavior change that leaves lasting impact inside and outside the classrooms.
